Background

The Nurses and Midwives Council of South Sudan was established by Ministerial Decree Number 005/2018, under the Ministry of Health and launched in November 2018. One of the main functions in the Terms of Reference of the Council is the registration of nurses and midwives in the country.

What is Registration?

A person who is registered under the Council and the Decree shall be entitled to:
  • Have his name entered on the nurses and midwives register;
  • Could use the title of “registered nurse”, “registered midwife”, “enrolled nurse or “enrolled midwife” or any abbreviation thereof against his or her name as approved by the Council.
The following categories of nurses  and midwives will be registered:
  • Registered Nurses (RN) – a person who has successfully completed the prescribed course of studies in nursing for a minimum period of 3years and is qualified and authorized to practice nursing;
  • Registered Midwives – means a person who has successfully completed the prescribed course of studies in midwifery for a minimum period of 3 years as direct entry and or who holds a post basic (registered) nursing certificate in midwifery for not less than one year and is qualified and authorized to practice midwifery;
  • Enrolled Nurses – a person who has completed not less than two years and five months of a recognized basic nursing educational programme and is qualified and authorized to practice nursing under the supervision of a registered nurse;
  • Enrolled Midwives – a person who has completed not less than two years and five months of a recognized basic midwifery educational programme and is qualified and authorized to practice midwifery under the supervision of a registered midwife.

Types of Registration

  1. Full Registration is when the holder is registered to practice nursing or midwifery at the required level for a period of four years, unless such registration is suspended or revoked under this Act.
  2. Temporary Registration is when the holder is registered to practice nursing or midwifery for not more than one year,  unless such registration is suspended or revoked under this Act.

Procedure for Registration

  1. All nurses and midwives must collect the Council approved and stamped Application Form to complete for the registration exercise. Application forms will cost a fee which will be payable on registration. No registration will be done if the correct forms are not used.
  2. Completed Application Forms and all required documents must be submitted to the Nursing and Midwifery Office. This could be sent and does no require physical presence of the person.
  3. All application forms will be reviewed by the Council appointed registration Committee within six (6) weeks of submission but may depend on the volume of applications being reviewed by the Council at the said time. The Council will endeavor, however, to inform the applicant if there is a delay in the review process beyond this time period.
  4. Once the application is reviewed and approved by the Committee, the applicant will be informed and requested two make all payments for the registration ad application form.
  5. Once all payments have been made, the registration certificate will be issued. An applicant could authorize someone to make payment and collect registration certificate on his or her behalf.
  6. All application forms and copies of documents will be maintained by the Council for file and records.
  7. Applicant will also be required to maintain a Continuous Professional Development log book for re-registration after 4 years.
  8. Registration is mandatory for all nurses and midwives to practice.

Requirements for Registration

  1. Fully completed Application form
  2. Original Secondary School Certificate
  3. Original Valid Academic Certificates
  4. Certificate of good conduct or Police clearance
  5. Transcript from Academic school
  6. Any previous registration certificates from other Councils (if registered elsewhere)
  7. Please include “national ID”

NAMCOSS Fees Structure

  • Registration Application forms: 200 SSP
  • Registration fees (long term foreign workers): 100 USD
  • Registration Fee (short term foreign workers: 50 USD
  • Replacement of lost Registration Certificate: 50 USD / 500 SSP
  • Registration fees (South Sudanese nationals): 500 SSP
  • Verification of Certificates: 100 USD
  • Professional ID Card: 500 SSP
  • Replacement of lost ID Card: 500 SSP
  • CPD Log Book: 500 SSP
